God I love this thing - it’s even suitably unperfect, so you can actually drive it. Although a 4 on the tree might be more fun...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I would love to own one of these some day - I just find that pillarless roofline so damn classy.

These things are really, really cool. We did a mechanical resto on a ‘53 D Cabriolet many years ago, original black over red. Incredible car. The coupes get all the love, but I have to agree that these pillarless sedans are superb.

i would imagine getting T-boned in one of those would not go well
they also missed the opportunity for suicide doors.

Lovely and rare color combo. This is a perfect car for touring and Sunday drives. Two things I would do to it - radial tires, and electronic ignition.
These are as sporty as an ocean liner, so a manual might actually be a negative. Odd fact, these have a transmission by Borg-Warner, MB wouldn’t have an in-house automatic until ~1962, debuting in the fintails (never put in an Adenauer, I think).

That's very you!

LOL - I wish!

I’d bet it would meet or beat anything else from 1962 in a side impact collision, because Mercedes.
Still terrible by today’s standards though.

The only body style I like better on the Adenauer is that 4 door cabriolet. Big bucks for those, I’m sure.

A year or two ago, I saw one of these for sale somewhere, it was a bit nicer than this one and they wanted $40k for it. That one did happen to have a 4-speed.
The auto suits the car better - and apparently was standard?
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:01 |

Real world, not BaT, would be under 40K for this car, yeah. I am sure for the US market, auto was standard, and maybe a 4-speed was a no-cost special order item. I’d prefer the automatic. This is definitely one of those cars you want to buy after someone dumps a box of money into it.
If I had money burning a hole in my pocket, and space to park it, I’d have some interest in this - but I don’t have much to spare of either.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:05 |

You never know with BaT - sometimes for older cars, the real buyers aren’t there, which leads to the bid ending low and RNM. This one feels like it’s in a dead zone, where it can’t be restored economically, but Adenauer fans might not think it’s nice enough to enjoy as is.
I don’t know where the bid ends up, but my guess is that it doesn’t sell. Hope I’m wrong!

The 300d is perfection. IMO the last “old-school” Luxury car this side of a Rolls-Royce/ Bentley. Not a single damn given about gimmicky features, just a traditional car where everything is just 50% better.

I want a 300 wagon in blue
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:16 |

Pillarless roofline? I approve!
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:17 |

Yeah these are expensive to restore... I looked into a wagon 300 once and wow the list got expensive fast.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:19 |

An Adenauer wagon? Only a few of those exist.
I think a specialist restoration on one of these would get into 6 figures.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:20 |

Pretty similar color to the Benz, too!
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:21 |

These are so classy! I’d prefer this over almost any other 50s car

If reserve is over 25K, there’s a chance it won’t sell. I’d like to see a legit no reserve auction.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:24 |

Sadly, they never made a wagon out of that generation.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:25 |

There’s such a thing as an Adenauer wagon?? I didn’t think there was.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:27 |

I believe a handful were made, Binz conversions (MB didn’t have a factory wagon until the 123) :
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:28 |

Adenauer!
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:29 |

Ha - figures someone converted it. Was thinking MB didn’t make any wagons before the 123, but wasn’t sure about the 111.
But, tbh, I don’t like it. The squareback wrecks the beautiful curves of the car.

Well if it isn’t those exact years then they did that looks a lot like that. They did in 56 or so.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:33 |

Mine is better looking.
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:34 |

Fintail is a lot more knowledgeable about these than I am - go with his response and ignore mine :)
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:36 |

There were a few firms that converted 110/111 fintails into wagons - most notably IMA Universal, who had a similarly angular conversion that fits better with the lines of a fintail, and is very sought after today:

Agree, but that’s a bit risky when you might be putting the car in front of the wrong audience. I would happily list any E46 M3 at no reserve there, but not a 56 year old four door.

Especially now, but Konrad did have his day
![]() 10/10/2018 at 15:39 |

That’s the fun! No reserve,roll the dice . I’d throw in a 5K bid and hope :)
You never know what could happen:

Those two are insane. I prefer cars as original as possible myself, but those are eye-watering.

Also, sometimes this happens with older vehicles, too:

But unfortunately sports the same flesh tone.

That’s what the 300D Cabriolet is, it was basically identical to this one below. “D” did not yet mean Diesel, it was simply a model number. It had a lower compression, twin-carbureted version of the 300SL’s engine. We took the side plate off the block and found the coolant had returned to silicate, it was just piles of little rocks & rust in the block. You can lubricate the suspension on the fly from a grease reservoir. Really advanced for 1953!

Either Adenauer, or a Coca-Cola executive. Either way, classy car.
